Overview
Afterdark is a Chrome extension published by Krisp Byte. Its purpose is to give websites a readable dark appearance, with controls for individual sites, automatic dark mode, and appearance adjustments.

Afterdark processes webpage information on your device to create dark mode. Your settings and selected hostnames stay local. The extension has no account system, advertising, analytics, or developer-operated data collection server.
Information handled on your device
Afterdark accesses webpage structure, styles, colors, and visual resources to adapt backgrounds, text, links, borders, and controls. It observes changes to enabled pages so new content can receive the same appearance.

Afterdark does not extract passwords, form entries, payment details, health information, or private messages for collection. It does not record keystrokes, clicks, or scrolling as activity logs, or request your location. Its styling engine may run on pages displaying these kinds of information to change their appearance.
Network requests and sharing
When needed to analyze colors, Afterdark retrieves CSS and image resources from servers identified by the webpage. Those servers receive the requested resource address and normal connection information, including your IP address.
The extension’s background resource helper omits cookies, authorization credentials, and referrers and refuses redirects. The engine’s ordinary same-origin resource requests can follow browser rules for that website, including its cookies and caching.
Afterdark does not send your webpage contents, tab addresses, or saved preferences to Krisp Byte. It has no publisher-operated data collection server. It does not sell user data or share it for advertising, profiling, or purposes unrelated to dark mode.
All executable extension code is included in the package. Afterdark does not download remote JavaScript or WebAssembly.
Chrome permissions
- Storage: remembers your appearance settings, Always on setting, and individual website choices on your device.
- Scripting: inserts the packaged dark-mode scripts and helper into supported tabs when needed, including pages already open before installation.
- HTTP and HTTPS website access: reads page styles and website addresses, applies themes across supported pages and frames, and retrieves CSS or image resources for color analysis. This access lets Always on work as you browse.
You can restrict site access in Chrome. Doing so can prevent automatic dark mode on those websites. Chrome-protected pages and local files are not supported.
Storage and your choices
Saved preferences remain until you change them or remove the extension. When Always on is off, turning a website off removes its saved hostname. Turning Always on off restores your individual site choices. Reset appearance resets colors and sliders without deleting those choices.
Removing Afterdark removes its extension settings from that Chrome profile. Website session-storage caches are separate from extension storage and follow Chrome’s rules for tab sessions and session restoration. Close the relevant tabs and clear that website’s stored data to remove those caches. Temporary memory caches disappear when their browser context ends.
You can disable Afterdark or change its website access in Chrome’s extension settings. Disabling or removing it and reloading affected pages stops its processing there.
Limited Use
Afterdark’s use of information received through Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Information handled by the extension is used only to provide its disclosed dark-mode functionality. It is not used or transferred for personalized advertising, unrelated purposes, creditworthiness assessments, or lending decisions. Krisp Byte does not receive locally processed page information for human review.
This website and support
The Krisp Byte website is separate from the Afterdark extension. This website uses Google Tag Manager, Vercel Web Analytics, and Vercel Speed Insights. Those website services may process information about visits to these pages, browser and device details, and website performance. They are not included in the Afterdark extension and do not receive your other browsing activity from it.
If you contact us by email or through our website, we receive the message and contact details you provide so we can respond to your request. This is separate from the extension’s automatic operation. Please avoid sending passwords or private webpage content when reporting an issue.
