Pin Afterdark in Chrome and click its moon icon. Dark mode starts off until you choose to enable it.
Choose your mode.
Enable This website for the current hostname, or Always on for supported websites. With Always on enabled, turn off This website to save an exception. Chrome must allow Afterdark access to the sites you want to theme.
Make it yours.
Pick a palette and adjust the sliders. Use Alt + Shift + D to toggle a site in either mode, including adding or removing an Always on exception. Customize it in Chrome’s extension shortcut settings.

Built to work on your device.
Afterdark processes webpage styles and website addresses to apply your choices. Preferences, selected hostnames, and excluded hostnames stay local. The extension has no accounts, advertising, or analytics, and does not send page content or saved settings to Krisp Byte.
It may retrieve CSS and images from a website’s resource servers and cache visual information locally. The privacy policy explains these requests, storage, and your controls.

Afterdark supports HTTP and HTTPS websites. Chrome blocks extensions on internal pages, New Tab, the Chrome Web Store, and other extensions’ pages. Afterdark does not theme Chrome’s toolbar, its built-in PDF viewer, or local files.
What if part of a website looks wrong?
Text inside images, canvas, or video and some closed web components may not adapt. Restricted resources can also limit theming. Turn off This website to restore its original appearance. If Always on is enabled, this saves an exception while leaving other websites dark. Contact us with the website address and a description of the issue; avoid including private page content.
Does Always on replace my saved sites?
No. Exclusions are saved separately from your individual site choices. Turning Always on off restores those choices. Remove an exception under Excluded websites, or turn the site back on while Always on is enabled. Reset appearance changes the palette and sliders only.
Which languages does Afterdark support?
The controls follow Chrome’s interface language by default, with English as the fallback. To choose another language, click the globe and current language in the popup header, uncheck Automatic (Chrome language), and use the dropdown. Your choice applies immediately and stays saved on your device. Version 1.1.0 includes 40 languages in 41 catalogs: Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian use a right-to-left layout. Translations are included in the extension and need no translation service. Afterdark translates its own controls, not webpage content.
Is Afterdark an official Dark Reader extension?
Afterdark uses the bundled, MIT-licensed Dark Reader engine. It is an independent extension by Krisp Byte and is not an official Dark Reader product.
